Canon World

Being Human takes place in modern-day England, circa about 2009 and beyond, with the delightful addition of a cast of supernatural extras haunting the streets (sometimes literally). Vampires, werewolves, and ghosts are very much real in this England, but are mostly secret. The series begins in Bristol, and much of the action takes place at the house where our golden trio dwell, or at the hospital where Mitchell and George work. Later, Mitchell moves house with his friends to Barry Island in Wales, to an old bed and breakfast called Honolulu Heights.

For more info, see the Being Human wiki.

History

- Born July 29th, 1893 in Ireland. Joined up and fought in World War I as a twentysomething. Came upon a group of vampires feeding on the near-dead corpses of his troop; offered himself in their place. Herrick, leader of the vampire crew, bit Mitchell and turned him. Mitchell went back to the camp and tried to ride out his symptoms, but gave in to his bloodlust benignly, poisoned his mate, drank him dry. Deserted the army.

- THEN he gave into the bloodlust nonbenignly. Lived the vampire high life with Herrick, killing and feeding and acting like a vampire dick. Achieved great notoriety but grew dissatisfied in the 60s. After a semi botched murder, took a neighbor woman, Josie, hostage while hiding out from the cops. Did not kill her but fell for her; took up with her and was "saved" for awhile by the power of her love. Got on the wagon! Stopped feeding!

- Fell off the wagon and left Josie. Got on the wagon. Fell off the wagon. On and on till 1999 when he went clean with the help of a vampire friend, Carl. Fell off a little. Got on a little.

- Saved George Sands, a werewolf, from being beaten by some vampires. Became unlikely friends, then housemates. Moved into a home in Bristol haunted by a mostly cheerful ghost, Annie. Had some good times. Worked in a hospital as a porter with George. Developed a schedule. Started seeing a girl from the hospital, Lauren. Killed Lauren. Herrick turned Lauren; Lauren started hanging around to tease Mitchell. Everyone wanted to know when Mitchell will come back to debauchery. Mitchell adamant about humanity and staying on the wagon. Herrick proposed a selection process, turning preferable people. Mitchell struggled with demons and darkness, but came around to Herrick's way of thinking. Turned out Herrick had been imprisoning people as bloodbags on the sly. Mitchell proposed a showdown; George fought Herrick instead as a werewolf, killed Herrick. End S1.

- S2, Ivan came home to mock Mitchell. Daisy, Ivan's wife, also a vampire, hooked up with George, who has a girlfriend, who he turned into a werewolf. The vacuum of power made the vampire community unstable. Mitchell stepped up as king. Made everyone go on the wagon except Ivan, who he supplied with fresh blood. Mitchell got a girlfriend, Lucy who secretly belonged to a cult. Cult bombed the vampire meeting. Ivan and pretty much everyone else died. Mitchell and Daisy killed a train of twenty people as revenge. Mitchell attacked the cult. Cult leader sent Annie to Purgatory. Mitchell upset.

- S3, the gang moved to Wales. Mitchell went to Purgatory to save Annie. Had to relieve his old kills. Escorted by the spirit of one of the girls from the train that he killed. She was understandably pissed. Told him that he’ll be killed by a werewolf. Mitchell FREAKED OUT. Developed a grudge against werewolves (except friendwolves). Got worse when a werewolf dad and son moved in with them for a little while. Mitchell got a visit from the Old Ones. Also got a visit from a big fan of his, who had collected a scrapbook of train murder stuff. Mitchell killed him. Kept the book.

Things are not good.

Personality

Mitchell is cool, charming, handsome, and fairly easy-going. What’s beneath is darker and more complex. VAMPIRE COMPLEX.

For a Cool Vampire, Mitchell can be dorky. Likes old things that are more of his actual generation. Hates IKEA. Prefers to stay in with his housemates and watch television - this quiet life is related to careful avoidance of any temptation that might shove toward his vampire roots.

Mitchell is witty, sarcastic, and mostly good company. He enjoys friends, interacts with people without much difficulty. No matter what he is or what he's capable of, there’s something affable about Mitchell.

Then he vamps out and ruins stuff.

The longer he lives, the more convinced Mitchell becomes of the monstrosity of vampires. He’s not human – something more and something worse - and he struggles with this balance. Has Mitchell always had a seed of evil in him? Was it the vampire lifestyle that killed his humanity? Mitchell should be held responsible for the lives that he's taken - but should blame go to nature?

Mitchell's involvement with humanity is with friends, girlfriends - people who are good. This is key to his stability. If everything’s in harmony, he can deal with feelings of bloodlust, manage guilt, and function. As soon as something goes out of whack, Mitchell is primed to careen off into darker places.

Mitchell is ruled by emotions. He tries to keep control, but his passions get the better of him. When Bristol's vampires are killed. Mitchell responds with volatility. Twenty innocent people get murdered.

Mitchell also has a capacity to forgive, and shows stupid mercy. Partly selfishness: if Mitchell forgives, he can one day be forgiven. But it’s also his altruism. He wants the best for people, and he shows this time and again. That's not to say that he can't be cruel in his judgment - as vampire king, Mitchell sentences Cara to brutal death to make an example of her, compromising his own morals and pity.

Mitchell's guilt is a tension. His life is founded on betterment, self-control. He tries to forget what he’s done, claims at one point that he’s not hiding, but he is. Tries to keep himself honest, but there’s no way to process his past. So he ignores it and gets by.

When attacked or confronted, Mitchell slips into justifications. He becomes overly defensive of things he's done, occasionally subverting the blame to his condition. It's at this point in his blame/guilt cycle that it’s easiest for Mitchell to submit to being a vampire - then, later, feels horrified and ashamed. He’s forced to confront the evil of what he is, or at least the evil that he’s capable of, a part of himself that he loathes. He finds people to "save" him, and in his own mind, puts the onerous of salvation on them. They are good, they can save him from himself; with them, he can be good. But he must see himself for what he is, or else he will never change.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Aʙɪʟɪᴛɪᴇs
VAMPIRES:
- are immortal, by and large (subject to the weaknesses below).
- have superhuman strength, speed, and senses; grows stronger as they age.
- can also sense other superhumans (werewolves and ghosts; within the game, I'll proceed on a case-by-case basis with player approval should it apply).

Wᴇᴀᴋɴᴇssᴇs
VAMPIRES:
- are killed by stakes to the heart, decapitation. They might seem like they've been killed by dismemberment or explosion, but if vampire blood is dripped on their remains, they can be resurrected.
- need to feed to be 100% fighting fit! Going without blood is similar to withdrawal from any addictive substance. They eventually overcome the physical symptoms of the withdrawal, but psychologically they will always remain unstable and susceptible to backsliding.
- werewolf blood is toxic--ingesting werewolf blood is like being poisoned, and it burns on contact with the skin.
- repelled by religious symbols, to the point of pain. If the symbol is owned or wielded by someone who loves them, the symptoms are nonexistent.
- cannot enter a private building unless expressly invited; cannot enter sacred ground at all.

Oᴛʜᴇʀ
VAMPIRES:
- need fresh blood, preferably from a living human. They can drink bagged blood, but it ends up tasting pretty gross.
- cannot appear on camera or video. paintings are okay so he'll do great in Thedas.
- are not fond of sunlight, but can survive, especially while wearing heavy coats and sunglasses.

Arrival Inventory

- green knitted gloves, fingerless
- 4 packs of cigarettes
- 1 lighter, the kind that holographically strips when you turn it back and forth
- 1 dark denim jacket
- 1 pair sunglasses
- his clothes (1 pair jeans, 1 green plaid button-up, 1 white t-shirt totally covered in blood)
- 1 mug of dark roast coffee
- 2 vampire fangs, bloody, with roots
- 1 train seat, bloody, ripped out of the floor
- 1 stake, wooden
- his housekeys (hooray)

'Human'ization

I mean that's it, really. When he wants or sometimes when he doesn't want (i.e., when he smells blood), Mitchell can/will sprout fangs and his eyes turn entirely black. This is referred to as "manifesting". Otherwise a vampire looks entirely human. Physically, their temperature is cold and their pulse slows to about one beat per minute.

Fit

I mean if I give Rifters a bit of a bad rep because Mitchell is super close to being a demon (but don't call him a demon, that's mildly offensive), I think that would be cool. I'm also just interested to see how he adjusts and what sort of friends he can make. I've never played him in a setting with zero technology but since he was born in the 1800s it'll be kind of a blast from the past anyways, to an extent.

also I want to force the Inquisition to deal with a bloodthirsty monster and maybe do a plot where he does bad stuff that puts a dent in productivity.

Ah-- yeah.

[If Mitchell sounds uncomfortable, that's because he is. And Irish. That will likely read different in Thedas, where all the accents are technically foreign to him.]

So-- it's been awhile since I've had t' do entertainment for myself. Even when there was nothing on the television, you had, I don't know. Crossword puzzles. DVDs, to watch. Something. So what d'yous do here for fun and entertainment? [Er, hang on. He qualifies that question:] Quiet fun and entertainment. I took a look in that pub of yours. It's a little-- loud.

[Jesus, does he sound old.]
